SAN JOSE MARIA

Saint Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer (Barbastro, January 9, 1902 – Rome, June 26, 1975) came to Madrid to prepare his doctoral thesis which in those times could only be obtained in the Central University. He celebrated his first Mass in Madrid at the Basilica of St. Michael on April 20, 1927.

When the Basilica was declared pontifical in 1930, St. Josemaria celebrated the Holy Eucharist which was attended by a multitude of members of the Opus Dei which he founded in 1928. Since 1959, through the initiative of the then Apostolic Nuntio to Spain Archbishop Antoniutti, the pastoral care of the Basilica was entrusted to the priests of Opus Dei.

With immense gratitude, his image is venerated in one of the lateral chapels of the Basilica.

NEW ICON OF SAINT JOSEMARIA

This first icon of Saint Josemaria Escriva was sent to us from Russia. An icon in the Eastern tradition is no more than a picture.

The first icon of Saint Josemaria was done by a very famous orthodox painter, Alexandre Sokolov, whose works are seen in several cathedrals all over the world. The icon of the Virgin of the Eucharist with the Child represented as within a chalice, has a miraculous reputation. He is also the author of the icon of San Rafael, which serves as the cover of the latest and most popular edition of "Path" in Russia.

The writings which St. Josemaria bears on his hands in the icon says: "God calls everyone to holiness. Any work can be an instrument for the sanctification of the self and of others". No one had ever said something like this. As in any icon, the gold background represents the eternity. San Josemaria unites, in his head and heart, the heavens and the earth.

It took two years for this icon to be finished. A mass was celebrated by Archbishop Pablo Pezziml at the Cathedral of Moscow wherein the icon was blessed and exposed for public veneration.

The icon can be seen in some of the centers of Opus Dei in Moscow.

We are happy that you like it.

People are left speechless. The image of St. Josemaria was done really well that it seems very realistic. The Virgin Mary is noteworthy.
