BROTHERHOOD DESCRIPTION

THE CONFRATERNITY OF THE MOST HOLY CHRIST OF THE FAITH AND OF FORGIVENESSAND MARY IMMACULATE, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH AND ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL (LOS ESTUDIANTES)

 

The confraternity is an association of the lay faithful whose rules and regulations were approved on May 26, 1994. Canonically erected, it is associated to the Pontifical Basilica of St. Michael in Madrid. An ancient image of Jesus Christ Crucified (18th century) is venerated by the confraternity. Since 1996, the confraternity have had the image of Our Lady of Sorrows.

 

In accordance with its articles, the intention of the confraternity is to give cult of special devotion to Jesus Christ in His Passion and Death and to Mary Immaculate, Mother of the Church.

 

To encourage an authentic brotherhood between its members and collaborate with the ecclesiastic hierarchy, the confraternity carries out welfare and charitable works to the needy. It also promotes formative activities and encourages religious piety so that its members are given solid doctrinal formation which strengthens their faith.

 

The most significant cult acts throughout the year are:

 

*the Processional Exit (Station of Atonement) on the evening of the Palm Sunday of the beautiful floats that carry the images of Jesus Christ and Mary. The floats are lifted by the costaleros (float bearers) and are accompanied by the Hermanos y Hermanas nazarenos y Hermanas Damas de mantilla

 

*the Way of the Cross of Penance, a preparatory for the Holy Week, done on Friday before the Palm Sunday (ancient Friday of Passion or of Sorrows);  the image of the Holiest Christ is bore over the shoulders by men and passes through the adjacent streets of the Basilica.

 

*the Eucharistic acts of the second Thursdays of the month, the Triduum to the Holiest Christ days before the procession, the Quinario to the Blessed Virgin, the Eucharistic Celebrations of the Confraternity, etc.
